JUNIOR CLASSES 

Age 10-13

DANCE • THEATRE • MUSIC • CREATIVE ARTS

DANCE CLASSES 

Careful attention is paid to young, developing bodies at this level.  Authentic movement techniques are richly explored allowing students the space to build mastery of technique. 

Dancers will be exposed to a comprehensive curriculum that affords them the most beneficial tools for advancement.  Classes will also focus on movement development, performance skills, coordination, and choreography. 

Students in this age group may choose a more recreational track with Level 3 classes or our intensive program of study with Level 4 classes.

• Ballet 3 / 4 - age 10 -13   

Tuesdays 4:00-5:00pm 

Students will build upon and enhance their basic technical foundation into a rich classical practice.  Students will experience intricate barre work, pre-pointe preparation, center practice, progressions, and classical variations.  Students will make the theoretical connections from training to performances and develop a strong balletic aesthetic and facility.  Students enrolled in Level 4 Dance should also enroll in Ballet 4/5/6 

• Jazz/Contemporary 3 / 4- age 10-13    Tuesdays 5:00-6:00pm 

(must be taken with Ballet 3/4)

Contemporary Styles explores the post-modern genres of dance - Jazz (Broadway, Funk, Street), Modern Dance, Contemporary, Improvisation/Choreography.  Students develop a strong sense of musicality, coordination, and personal style.  

• Hip Hop/Acro 3 / 4 - age 10-13   

Tuesdays 6:00-7:00  

Hip Hop is a fun and exciting class where students learn coordination, rhythm, and how to GROOVE! This class is designed for students to let loose and DANCE! Hip Hop choreography and freestyle dance promote coordination, rhythm, and confidence.  Students will also engage with acro dance, tumbling and floor work.

• Tap  3 / 4 - age 10-13   

Thursdays 4:00-5:00pm 

Students in Tap 4 will gain a strong awareness intermediate/advanced technical steps, terminology,

and historical background while enhancing rhythm, coordination, and creative making.  Attention, at this level, is paid to proper technical execution, clarity of sound, rhythm analysis, musicality, speed and syncopation.  Students will engage with improvisation and choreographic development to enhance their communication as a tap dancer.

• Modern 4 / 5- age 10-14   

Wednesdays 5:00-6:00pm 

(must be taken with Ballet 4 or 5 and Jazz 4)

Modern dance is a highly expressive style of dance that challenges the structured dance technique of classical ballet. The focus of modern dance is expression, rather than following a rigid set of postures or technical positions that ballet dancers are trained in. Modern dance movements are considered freeform and fluid, and are often inspired by other dance styles—for example: African dance, ballet, and folk dance.

• Ballet 4 / 5 / 6 - ages 10+   

Wednesdays 4:00-5:00 

Ballet 4/5/6 acts as an additional class for students enrolled in Level 4  to gain further knowledge and awareness of Ballet technique and aesthetics.  Ballet 4/5/6 is a multi-leveled Classical Technique Class required of Level 4, 5, 6 Dance Students.

Musical Theatre 3 / 4 - age 10-13 

Thursdays 5:00-6:00 

Students will immerse into the world of BROADWAY where they will study various Broadway shows and learn music and choreography from select titles.  Musical Theatre students will spend their time learning new music and dance, stage presence, performance skills, audition prep,  and foundational performance theories. This class is an exploration of American Musical Theatre. Students will study the work of the actor/singer/dancer and use their gained knowledge to develop as performers while preparing and presenting as soloists as well as members of small groups and larger ensembles.

• Kids Musical Theatre  - age 7-12   

Saturdays 10am to 11am 

SING! DANCE! ACT! CREATE! Children will explore the basics of stage direction, acting, ensemble singing, movement, stage presence, character development, improvisation, and imaginative play in a safe and supportive environment. Children build self-confidence and awareness through a series of exercises, games, and collaborations. Students will also explore puppetry, costume design, and storytelling. This is a wonderful program for all children to let their creative voice shine.

Theatre Arts 3 / 4  - age 10-13    

Mondays 5:00-6:00

Theatre Arts 3 explores the world of Theatre Making and Design.  Students explore all that happens behind the curtain from Directing, Stage Management, Costuming, Prop Design and Construction, Stage Make-up, Producing, Set Design, and Lighting and Sound Design.  Students also engage with Puppetry, Mask-Making and Storytelling.

Musical Theatre 3 / 4 - age 10-13 

Thursdays 5:00-6:00

• Acting 3 / 4 age 10-13     

Thursdays 6:00-7:00 

Students intensely explore acting methods, stage presence, character development, improvisation, and imaginative play in a safe and supportive environment.  Students build self-confidence and awareness through a series of exercises, games, and collaborations.  Junior level theatre classes allow students to holistically engage the mind and body, while making connections to theory and improvisational impulse.

Playwriting  3 / 4 age 10-13     

Thursdays 7:00-8:00  

Students work with the foundations of creative writing and play structure.  Members of the class devise work in a collaborative setting / share / gain feedback and inspiration / workshop ideas and concepts / plays will be performed at a later date by students and community of The Complex
