EARLY CHILDHOOD DANCE PROGRAM - age 3-5

Classes are  designed to enhance gross and fine motor skill development,

collaborative creativity, self-awareness, rhythm, cognitive thinking and independent processing.

Classes are fun and supportive and allow our littlest learners to flourish! 

•Creative Movement  - age 3-4    Saturdays 9:15-10:00am

Children are exposed to beginning dance concepts in a fun, recreational and supportive way.  Children will explore the use of the body though storytelling and music.  Creative Movement class aids in the physical development of the body and exercises the imagination!  Students explore Elementary Ballet, Tumbling, Balance Beam, Improvisation, and, obstacle courses, props, and  imaginative movement.

•Introduction to Dance  and Tumbling - age 5-6      Wednesdays 4:00-5:00 or Saturdays 10:00-11:00am

Introductory classes aid in the development of gross motor skills, movement creativity, fitness, and body awareness.  Classes blend educational concepts in a developmentally designed curriculum that places special emphasis on building self-confidence and self-esteem. Students will gain foundational awareness of Ballet Technique, Modern Concepts of Movement and Tumbling/Balance Beam Work.  Kiddos have a blast in these fun, upbeat, and supportive classes!

YOUTH DANCE PROGRAM - age 6-9

Comprehensive curriculum designed to ensure the proper development of young bodies. Under our professional faculty, students will enhance coordination, creativity, teamwork, task-mastering, confidence, and learning skills. Explore Rhythms, Movement Concepts and Elementary Technical Concepts. 

We honor dance as an art form and not as a competitive sport or pageantry.

Students may take one or multiple classes in all genres/disciplines (dance, theatre, art, music) offered.

• Ballet 1 / 2 - age 6-8    Mondays 4:00-5:00pm

Ballet 1/2 students are introduced to the beginnings of proper technique for ballet in a positive, inspiring, and creative environment. Classes focus on developing strength, flexibility, musicality, self-confidence and awareness, and love for dance.  

• Jazz / Tap 1 / 2 - age 6-8    Mondays 5:00-6:00pm

Students in Jazz Dance 1/2 classes are exposed to a wide range of Jazz Dance styles and techniques. Students explore Classic Jazz, Broadway Jazz, Funk, Modern Jazz, and Contemporary Dance.  Proper attention is paid to muscle development, body awareness, musicality, and performance skills.  Students will enjoy an upbeat class that explores a variety of styles in a fun atmosphere.  Tap I/ 2 introduces students to the percussive form of dance.  Children will gain a foundation in basic technical steps, terminology, and historical background while enhancing rhythm, coordination, and creative making. We highly suggest taking a Ballet class if enrolling in Jazz/Tap Dance. 

• Ballet 2 / 3 - age 7-9    Mondays 4:00-5:00pm 

Ballet 2/3 students work to master proper technique for ballet in a positive, inspiring, and creative environment. Each week students perform a classical barre, expand knowledge of technical exercises and concepts, practice petite allegro, center work, progressions and grande allegro.  Classes focus on developing strength, flexibility, musicality, self-confidence and awareness, and love for dance. 

• Jazz/Contemporary Dance Styles 2 / 3- age 7-9   Mondays 5:00-6:00pm 

Contemporary Styles explores the post modern genres of dance - Jazz (Broadway, Funk, Street), Modern Dance, Contemporary, Improvisation/Choreography.  Students develop a strong sense of musicality, coordination, and personal style.  Proper attention is paid to muscle development, body awareness, musicality, and performance skills.  Students will enjoy an upbeat class that explores a variety of styles in a fun atmosphere.  Strongly suggested to be taken with Ballet 2/3.

• Tap 2 / 3 - age 7-9    Tuesdays 5:00-6:00pm

Tap 2/3 focuses on musicality, clarity of sound, ensemble precision, and historical context.  Children will deepen their foundation of basic technical steps, terminology, and historical background while enhancing rhythm, coordination, and creative making.  Prior tap experience required

JUNIOR DANCE PROGRAM - age 9-13

Careful attention is paid to young, developing bodies at this level.  Authentic movement techniques are richly explored allowing students the space to build mastery of technique.  Dancers will be exposed to a comprehensive curriculum that affords them the most beneficial tools for advancement.  Classes will also focus on movement development, performance skills, coordination, and choreography.  Students in this age group may choose a more recreational track with Level III classes or our intensive program of study with Level IV classes.

• Ballet 3 - ages 9-13    Tuesdays  4:00-5:00pm 

Ballet 3 students work to master proper technique for ballet in a positive, inspiring, and creative environment. Each week students perform a classical barre, expand knowledge of technical exercises and concepts, practice petite allegro, center work, progressions and grande allegro.  Classes focus on developing strength, flexibility, musicality, self-confidence and awareness, and love for dance.  Students should take Ballet 2/3 in addition to Ballet 3

• Ballet 4 - age 9-13     Tuesdays 4:00-5:00pm 

Students will build upon and enhance their basic technical foundation into a rich classical practice.  Students will experience intricate barre work, pre-pointe preparation, center practice, progressions, and classical variations.  Students will make the theoretical connections from training to performances and develop a strong balletic aesthetic and facility.  Students in Ballet 4 must also enroll in Ballet 4/5/6

• Ballet 4 / 5 / 6 - ages 9+    Wednesdays 4:00-5:00pm 

Ballet 4/5/6 acts as an additional class for students in Level 4 Ballet class.  Ballet 4/5/6 is a multi-leveled Classical Technique Class required of Level 4, 5, 6 Dance Students.

• Modern 4 / 5- age 9-14   Wednesdays 5:00-6:00pm (must be taken with Ballet 4 and Jazz/Contemporary 4)

Modern dance is a highly expressive style of dance that challenges the structured dance technique of classical ballet. The focus of modern dance is expression, rather than following a rigid set of postures or technical positions that ballet dancers are trained in. Modern dance movements are considered freeform and fluid, and are often inspired by other dance styles—for example: African dance, ballet, and folk dance.

• Jazz/Contemporary Dance Styles 3 - age 9-13    Tuesdays 5:00-6:00pm (must be taken with Ballet 3 or 4)

Contemporary Styles explores the post modern genres of dance - Jazz (Broadway, Funk, Street), Modern Dance, Contemporary, Improvisation/Choreography.  Students develop a strong sense of musicality, coordination, and personal style.  

• Jazz / Contemporary Dance 4 - age 9-13    Tuesdays 5:00-6:00pm  (must be taken with Ballet 4 and Modern 4)

Jazz Dance 4 is an intensive study of Jazz Dance Techniques.  Students will expand their classical jazz vocabulary though a study of leading Jazz Dance styles including: Classic, Broadway, Commercial, Street, Latin, and Afro Jazz.  Students will engage with physical warm-up of the body, center floor technical skills, progressions and traveling phrases, choreography.

• Tap  3 / 4 - age 9-13   Thursdays 4:00-5:00pm

Students in Tap 4 will gain a strong awareness intermediate/advanced technical steps, terminology, and historical background while enhancing rhythm, coordination, and creative making.  Attention, at this level, is paid to proper technical execution, clarity of sound, rhythm analysis, musicality, speed and syncopation.  Students will engage with improvisation and choreographic development to enhance their communication as a tap dancer.

• Kids Hip Hop - age 7-13   Tuesdays 6:00-7:00pm

Hip Hop is fun and exciting class where students learn coordination, rhythm, and how to GROOVE! This class is designed for students to let loose and DANCE! HipHop choreography and freestyle dance promotes coordination, rhythm and confidence

Musical Theatre 3 / 4 - age 9-13  Thursdays 5:00-6:00

SING! DANCE! ACT! SHINE!  Students will immerse into the world of BROADWAY where they will study various Broadway shows and learn music and choreography from select titles.  Musical Theatre students will have a blast as they spend their time learning new music and dance, stage presence, performance skills and foundational performance theories. Musical Theatre class is an exploration of American Musical Theatre. Students will study the work of the actor/singer/dancer and use their gained knowledge to develop as performers. Students will prepare and present as soloists as well as members of small groups and larger ensembles.  Students will also gain tools for audition preparation.

TEEN DANCE PROGRAM - age 12+

Advanced Beginner / Intermediate Level.  Students at this level engage with comprehensive curriculums designed to enhance their technical skill, historical context, performance execution, creative making and critical thought.  Teen Level Classes are for students looking for a more recreational dance experience, movement for actors, or newer dance students.  Our Level 5 classes are for intermediate students with strong passion for dance.  Students must be accepted into the Conservatory Program to enroll in Level 5 Classes.

Teen Musical Theatre - age 12-19  Tuesdays 4:00-5:00pm

Musical Theatre class is an open level exploration of American Musical Theatre. Students will study the work of the actor/singer/dancer and use their gained knowledge to develop as musical theatre performers. Students will prepare and present as soloists as well as members of small groups and larger ensembles.  Students will also gain tools for audition preparation.

Teen Dance Foundations - age 12-19  Tuesdays 6:00-7:00pm

Dance Foundations is a class for the newer or more recreational dancer.  Various styles, genres, and concepts of Dance will be explored, such as, Jazz, Contemporary, Modern, Hip Hop, Choreography, and Improvisation.

• Teen Ballet - age 12-19     Tuesdays 7:00-8:00pm 

Classes include basic and intermediate ballet vocabulary as well as barre work, center work, and progressions, which develop strength, coordination and flexibility. Students at this level will be introduced to classical variations and historical context.

• Ballet 5 - age 12-14      (must be enrolled in Level 5 Conservatory/The Complex Dance Company-Apprentice)

Classes include intermediate/advanced ballet vocabulary as well as barre work, center work, and progressions, which develop strength, coordination and flexibility. Students at this level will be introduced to classical variations and historical context.  Pre-Pointe work to be explored at this level IF dancer shows physically readiness.

• Jazz/Contemporary 5- age 12-14    (must be enrolled in Level 5 Conservatory/The Complex Dance Company-Apprentice)

Contemporary Styles explores the post modern genres of dance - Jazz, Modern, Hip Hop, Contemporary, Improvisation. 

Students will deeply engage with creative making in addition to mastering technical accuracy.

• Tap  5/Teen Tap - age 12-19    Thursdays 5:00-6:00pm

Students in Teen Tap/Tap 5 will gain a strong  foundation in intermediate technical steps, terminology, and historical background while enhancing rhythm, coordination, and creative making.  Attention, at this level, is paid to proper technical execution, clarity of sound, rhythm analysis, musicality, speed and syncopation.  Students will engage with improvisation and choreographic development to enhance their communication as a tap dancer.

• Modern 5 - age 12-14    (must be enrolled in Level 5 Conservatory/The Complex Dance Company-Apprentice)

ADVANCED TEEN DANCE PROGRAM - age 14+

Students at the Senior level engage with comprehensive curriculums designed to enhance advanced concepts of technical skill, historical context, performance execution, creative making and critical thought.  Level 6 classes require multiple days and genres of training and assume an intermediate/advanced knowledge of classical and contemporary dance techniques.  Senior dancers are preparing for the next chapter of their arts and academic training and professional life.  These students are engaged artists, leaders, and proficient in advanced dance concepts.  Students in Level 6 must take all classes listed below.  Acceptance into the Level 6 program is by invitation or audition only.

• Ballet 6 - age 14+    (must be enrolled in Level 6 Conservatory/The Complex Dance Company)

Ballet 6 meets three times per week and assumes prior Ballet experience at the secondary level.  Students will enhance their basic technical foundation into a rich classical practice.  Students will experience intricate barre work, pre-pointe/pointe work, center practice, progressions, and classical variations.  Students will make the theoretical connections from training to performances and develop a strong balletic aesthetic and facility.

• Modern Dance 6- age 14+     (must be enrolled in Level 6 Conservatory/The Complex Dance Company)

Modern 6 explores multiple methods of modern dance, such as, Graham, Horton, Limon, and Duncan.  Students are versed in contextual and historical awareness of modern dance, exemplify a strong foundation of technical movement concepts, and richly build/refine creative voice through improvisation and collaborative movement making activities. 

• Jazz Dance 6- age 14+    (must be enrolled in Level 6 Conservatory/The Complex Dance Company)

Jazz Dance V is an intensive study of Jazz Dance Techniques.  Students will expand their classical jazz vocabulary though an advanced study of leading Jazz Dance styles including: Classic, Broadway, Commercial, Street, Latin, and Afro Jazz.  Students will engage with physical warm-up of the body, advanced center floor technical skills, complex progressions and traveling phrases, challenging and rigorous choreography.

• Tap 6- age 14+   (must be enrolled in Level 6 Conservatory/The Complex Dance Company)

Students in Tap V will possess a strong  knowledge of intermediate/advanced technical steps, terminology, and historical background while enhancing rhythm, coordination, and creative making.  Attention, at this level, is paid to proper technical execution, clarity of sound, rhythm analysis, musicality, speed and syncopation.  Students will engage with improvisation and choreographic development to enhance their communication as a tap dancer.

• Contemporary Dance 6 - age 14+    (must be enrolled in Level 6 Conservatory/The Complex Dance Company)

Contemporary dance is a style of expressive dance that combines elements of several dance genres including modern, jazz, lyrical and classical ballet. Contemporary dancers strive to connect the mind and the body through fluid dance movements.  Students will refine their artistry and performance presence, as well as, enhance their physical strength in combination with fluidity of movement.

• Dance Company - age 12+     (Level 5 and 6 Conservatory Members)

An innovative Dance Company for Social Change.  The Complex Performing and Creative Arts Centre’s  Dance Company is a place for creative exploration and growth.  Students develop their own work through a rich process of research, observation, consideration, ideation, and collaboration.  Students learn to advocate for their visions, ideas, and creations.  The Company produces full-length dance performances that speak to issues, injustices, and situations that are on the minds of our young people.  The Company brings their work to this and various communities to evoke social change.  Under the direction of Nichola Johnson, MFA
